1874 DOUBLE EAGLE TYPE 2 NGC PF 64 STAR ULTRA CAMEO. CAC

Price per Unit (piece): $315 000.00

1874 DOUBLE EAGLE TYPE 2 NGC PF 64 STAR ULTRA CAMEO, CAC

SUPERIOR to the Smithsonian specimen!

THIS IS ALSO THE EXCEEDINGLY RARE TYPE 2 VARIETY, struck through 1876, in much smaller numbers than the TYPE 3 that followed!

Virtually every superb Liberty proof Double Eagle on the market is the much more common TYPE 3, featuring "TWENTY DOLLARS" on the reverse. The TYPE 2 reads "TWENTY D".

Proof Double Eagles are among the most highly prized and coveted among all U.S. coinage. Struck in gold, of a classic, timeless design, and the largest regular-issue denomination released by the mint, these are proof coins most collectors only dream about owning.

If one checks the mint records, for the entire proof Double Eagle series, struck from 1859 to 1907, the mintages for these coins are extremely low - they range from a high of 158 coins struck for the 1903, to a low of only 20 coins struck for the 1874 and 1875.

The 1874 being offered is tied for the lowest mintage issues in the series - only 20 coins struck. So highly sought and coveted is this date, that many of the finest all-time collections did not own an 1874 proof Double Eagle, including the Harry W. Bass, Jr. collection. Of the 20 examples originally struck, only 7-9 are believed to have survived to this day - one of those coins has a permanent resting place in the Smithsonian Institute, the other in the ANA museum.

Of the 7-9 surviving 1874 proof Double Eagles, the example being offered, is THE FINEST - the highest graded specimen, in amazing PF 64 STAR ULTRA CAMEO condition.

Would you like a price comparison? The last 1894-S Branch Mint proof Barber dime to appear on the market, an example tied for finest known, with a total original mintage of 24 coins, sold for $1,900,000.

The recent 1913 proof Liberty nickel which sold, that was NOT the finest known, sold for $3,700,000.

At one time, in the past, the above two coins could have been purchased for far less - well under $1,000,000. Those days are gone. Those two coins have had an incredible price run, and it is now time to look at other areas of U.S. numismatic coinage for the next rarities to take off, and surpass the magic million dollar level.

I don't often make price predictions, but...

The fabulous, unsurpassed, stunning, "Crown Jewel" 1874 being offered is destined to be among the next U.S. rarities to explode in value. I guarantee this coin will be a $1,000,000+ winner of the future.

And for the future owner who pays $1,000,000+? It will be a tremendous value for him/her as well, for this coin has potential well into seven - even eight - figures.

DESCRIPTION: Cameo frost so heavy, it rivals the modern proof gold mint products of today! This coin has thick, snow-white (for a gold coin!) frost, complemented by haze-free, spot-free deeply mirrored fields! A simply stunning, stunning coin, the ultimate for the date, and for the very rare Type 2 variety of the Liberty Double Eagle! CVI? OFF THE CHARTS!
