1960-D FRANKLIN PCGS MS 65 FBL

SKU: 556
1960-D FRANKLIN PCGS MS 65 FBL. FROM THE SAME HORDE AS THE PLATE COIN ON PAGE 266 in my latest book! HOLY MOLEY!!! BLINDINGLY VIBRANT HUES!!! ULTIMATE COLOR! GODZILLA LIVES! AN ALL-TIME MONSTER COLOR TONED MINT STATE FRANKLIN! One of the famous monster 1960-D color triplets, an example of which we offered last year. When I appraise mint state Franklin half dollars for color, I use a grading scale from “1” (ugly, poorest possible toning) to “10” (most spectacular, beautiful color toning possible). Very, very few mint state Franklin halves receive a “10” on the obverse or reverse. NO MS 67 Franklin half I have ever seen has ever been a “10” on BOTH obverse and reverse. This 1960-D has color I would rate as a “10” on obverse, and a “10” reverse!! For those of you not familiar with the story, there were 3 1960-D Franklin halves that were discovered almost 10 years ago that had a very interesting history. It seems they resided in a collection in a small mining town. The mineral being mined in the town was sulfur. The daily fumes from the sulfur mine inevitably toned these 3 1960-D Franklin halves in the most amazing iridescent Peter Max colors imaginable over 100% of their obverse and reverse! From shimmering sunburst gold, to wild greens, purples, crimson….. THIS COIN IS A MONSTER - and it deserves to be in a 66 holder! The third and final example appeared in auction two years ago. I was the under-bidder at over $4,000. I wasn’t going to let this one get away!! 1-1-3 RT
