While I’ve written books on proof coins struck from 1936 to the present, it’s most important to acknowledge some of the great-undervalued proof rarities struck prior to 1936!

Have you ever looked at the mintages of early proof coins? Like proof Morgan dollars? Or proof Seated dollars?

While Morgan dollars for commercial use, mint state coins, were struck in the millions (sometimes tens of millions) every year, proof coins on average had mintages of 1,000 coins or less!

And then there is the matter of storage of these beautiful silver proofs. There were no inert materials available 100+ years ago to preserve these stunning coins.

The bottom line is the earliest strikes, in well-preserved gem condition, are extremely rare.

I have handled many of the finest proof Morgans over the years. I have helped my clients assemble the #1 ranked finest proof Morgan collection in existence, featured on the NGC Set Registry.

But that was decades ago. Trying to assemble a Morgan set today of the quality of those top ranked sets is virtually impossible. The finest known examples are in strong hands, and until one of those collectors’s decides they wish to sell, they are simply unavailable.

But I will let you in on a secret: as much as I love proof Morgan dollars, my favorite proof dollar series are the Seated dollars! I love the classic beauty of the Seated Liberty image. When found in exceptional cameo condition, the coins are truly breathtaking.

It is easy to understand my love for superb cameo proof Morgan dollars. Well-preserved specimens represent the absolute ultimate in beauty and rarity! And when one considers how few were struck with exceptional cameo contrast- for some years we are talking a few dozen coins at most- and of those how few have survived with their original mint fresh as struck look intact!

But then when one considers proof Seated dollars, for every 4 proof Morgan dollars surviving in gem (Proof 65 or higher) Ultra Cameo condition there is ONE Seated dollar!!!

And when we are talking about ULTIMATE PROOF 67 + higher-grade examples in ULTRA CAMEO, the ratio is TEN to ONE! Ten proof Morgans for every Seated dollar!

The challenge is finding the coins! Since Seated dollars were last struck in 1873, while Morgan dollars were last struck in 1904 (excluding the 1921 Chapman and Zerbe proofs) there are far fewer Seated dollars surviving in gem cameo condition than Morgan dollars.

Consider the two charts I have compiled:

This 1870 ranks among the very finest proof Seated dollars in existence in Ultra Cameo condition, and it is the finest 1870 by a significant margin. I will confidently state I will NEVER see or handle another 1870 of similar quality! This 1870 Everest Seated Dollar is simply the pinnacle of what my EVEREST seal is all about! TALK ABOUT THE VIEW!!! WOW!!!!!

And it is not only a PF 67 ULTRA CAMEO; it is a PF 67 STAR ULTRA CAMEO!!!

The picture says it all folks! Please feel free to contact Caitlin Tomaska or myself, Rick Tomaska, if you have any questions on a coin that ranks among the most spectacular silver proof rarities from 19th century one could ever hope to own!!!

Regarding any PCGS graded examples; the finest known 1870 in a PCGS holder is a PR 66 DCAM.

One final comment…proof Seated dollars were struck before 1866, but they are of the "NO MOTTO” variety – without "IN GOD WE TRUST”. The "NO MOTTO” series is most desirable as well, but will be the top for another feature article!
